In the first instalment of race reports to come, we can't overlook Ben's achievement at London 2021. To summarise:
A PB of 2:29:19
75th overall
12th in the Abbott Marathon Majors Age Group World Championships
The Abbott World Marathon Majors are the 6 premier marathons in the world (Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York) and the inaugural Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Championship race was held WITHIN the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon. Ben placed 12th in his age category in the World Championships and an equally impressive 75th in the overall London results, in doing so accomplishing a lifelong dream to run a sub 2:30 marathon.
In Ben's words: 'I could say that went better than planned but it didn't, it went exactly to plan! I still can't get my head around the fact that I did it, 2:29:19! A hell of a lot of work has been put into this and I owe a lot of thanks as you seriously can't do this alone!
Thanks to Anthony Clark at XMiles for transforming my outlook on nutrition, I don't think he really knows how much of an impact this has had on my running! Also to Bridport Runners, without whom turning that door handle and getting out would be that much harder! Adam Slater, massive thanks for all the training and calming me down when I've had my doubts! And lastly to Vicky and Martha for letting me train so much!
I'm so pleased I've done this and especially to have done it this year, 20 years since my accident, Stoke Mandeville hospital this one's for you!'
